There has been a lot of rumors going around lately that the
NHL will be expanding. Reports say that the league is looking to expand in
Quebec City, Las Vegas, and Seattle. They are also interested in placing a
second team in Toronto. This all would be done by the year 2017. Now, before
you get all excited about the possibility of more professional hockey games to
watch, the commissioner of the NHL, Gary Bettman, wants to put all of these
silly rumors to rest. Bettman doesn’t believe that the league is in need of
expansion. In an interview he said, “ Our franchises have never been healthier.
Our league, in terms of its economic footing, has never been healthier.”
Personally, I am not a fan of Gary Bettman. The two NHL lockouts I have been
through during my hockey fan-life were way too difficult for me. However, I do
agree with him when it comes to the expansion of the NHL. If there were to be
four more teams added, I believe that it would take away from the competition
of the game. Think about it. There will be so many more players needed for the
expanded league. How good could all of the needed players possibly be?
